His life looks like a doze in a glass greenhouse, a doze crossed constantly by images and beyond, that world where he saw unfold the destruction. "Him before Germany and him after Germany, I wonder if these two men would never have met" asks the protagonist, expressing in an admirable way the excruciating dilemma from which flows-necessary and high-fiction Pahor and his passionate testimony civilian. In the pages of this novel, in fact, the richness of his literary talent does not let himself be confined to pure and painful memory of lager or getting voice of the Slovene minority persecuted. In Radko Suban, a man broke in two from barbarism, is nevertheless a chance to find himself and to be reborn thanks to the love of Arlette, a young French nurse. A love thwarted, where nothing is certain: yet every gesture of hers has the seal of a vitality that defeats the shadows and brings with it a promise of freedom that the writer portrays with emotion and amazement, the same one that catches us before the "perennial and imperceptible sprout of the Earth, good and immense."
