Giotto: "Rimutò l'arte di greco in latino, e ridusse al moderno." Con queste parole Cennino Cennini, pittore e teorico, sintetizza intorno al 1390 nel suo Libro dell'arte il ruolo innovatore di Giotto. Quello di interprete del nuovo naturalismo trecentesco, che supera gli schemi ieratici e innaturali dell'arte bizantina e apre all'Umanesimo. Un ruolo di rottura, avvertito chiaramente dai contemporanei. Il cronista trecentesco Giovanni Villani, qualche anno dopo la morte del pittore avvenuta l'8 gennaio 1337, lo definisce nella sua Cronica "il più sovrano maestro stato in dipintura che si trovasse al suo tempo, e quegli che più trasse ogni figura e atti al naturale". Pittore, architetto e scultore, Giotto è da sempre un mito. Certamente per la sua pittura "dal naturale", cioè dal vero, rivoluzionaria e innovatrice, per il nuovo senso dello spazio, del volume e del colore, che si lascia alle spalle il Medioevo. Ma anche per le capacità imprenditoriali, in grado di riorganizzare i cantieri artistici e compiere straordinarie imprese non solo per i francescani, ma per papi e re, da Roma ad Avignone, e nella stessa Firenze, dove nel 1334 viene eletto dal Comune "magistrum et gubernatorem" per i lavori nel duomo e nella città.
