Sono scene cruciali e piene di problemi. Quando Giovanni Scoto vi giunge, nel libro che doveva essere l'ultimo di "Sulle nature dell'universo", il Maestro che ne è il protagonista teme di dover affrontare un oceano periglioso: esso, dice, "prende avvio dalle opere della sesta contemplazione profetica sull'istituzione della totalità", e "tratterà del ritorno di tutte le cose in quella natura che non crea e non è creata". Ma la difficoltà della materia e "l'incontro e lo scontro di tante diverse interpretazioni" rendono questo Libro IV "impraticabile per le ondate vorticose, scivoloso per l'ambiguità dei discorsi, pericoloso per le sirti (cioè per i tratti dottrinali oscuri)". li viaggio attraverso l' oceano è la prima, grande immagine del Libro IV del Periphyseon: in realtà, scrive Peter Dronke, esso "è il viaggio attraverso il tema del ritorno, in tutta la sua irriducibile complessità".
